107 years since the debut of Pichichi
Athletic Club’s first major legend made his debut by scoring two goals against Real Madrid in the Cup
Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, better known as Pichichi, made his debut with Athletic Club on 17 March, 1913 in the semi-final of the Cup, which ended with a 3-0 victory over Real Madrid, which he scored twice that day, in the 2nd and 11th minutes; Cortadi made the third at 53′.
After 12 seasons defending our shield, he won the Regional Championship five times and the Cup four times. He said goodbye to Athletic Club on 8 May, lifting the Cup title of 1921, after beating Atletico de Madrid in the final, by 4 goals to 1, thanks to the doublets scored by Acedo and Laca.
His reputation and repercussions went beyond our borders to the point that, since 1953, the trophy that distinguishes the top scorer of LaLiga each season bares his name.
