Today, 16 years ago, Athletic Club won Real Madrid at San Mames with goals scored by Del Horno (twice), Yeste and Urzaiz
The 20th of March of 2004 will remain forever in the memory of the Athletic supporters. Athletic Club received Real Madrid at La Catedral on the 29th matchday of the First Division after the team from Madrid was defeated at the final of the Copa del Rey against Real Zaragoza, three days earlier.
The team led by Ernesto Valverde took the lead and put the ball in the net in the last stretch of the first half thanks to goals scored by Fran Yeste and Ismael Urzaiz . Real Madrid managed to draw the match by means of Raúl’s doublets, but it was Asier Del Horno and his two more goals that made the triumph fall on the side of the lions.
A great victory of Athletic that added three essential points in the fight for the positions of UEFA. A place they finally got as they finished the season ranked fifth. In the following video you can see the full brief of that night at San Mames.
