Eight years since our victory in Gelsenkirchen
On 29 March 2012 Athletic Club prevailed 2-4 over Schalke 04 in the Europa League quarter-final first leg
Exactly eight years ago today, on 29 March in the 2011/12 season – a season in which we enjoyed plenty of good results-, we lived one of the most spectacular episodes when the side managed by Marcelo Bielsa conquered Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, beating powerful German side Schalke 04 2-4 in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg.
The match began with a goal from Llorente on 20 minutes and the local team responded with a goal from Raúl, who managed to give the temporary lead to the German side in the second half. Athletic Club’s attacking whirlwind was rewarded with three goals in 19 minutes (Llorente scored on 74 minutes, De Marcos on 81, and Muniain on 93), establishing the final winning score, 2-4.
The second leg was exciting too. Their 2-2 draw on April 5 at San Mamés qualified Athletic Club for the semi-final of the competition.
