On this day, the fifth league

Today, 77 years ago, Athletic Club beat Zaragoza and became the first Club that got the trophy of the League

Today, 77 years ago (1943), April 4, Athletic Club lifted its fifth League title after beating Real Zaragoza 2-0 at San Mames on the last day of the competition.

On April 4, the two players that scored at La Catedral were Arqueta with a penalty and Panizo. Both were two key players in a team coached by Juan Urkizu, who led the competition without interruption from Matchday 8 to Matchday 26. The team line-up announced by Urkizu was the following: Rivero, Arqueta, Mieza, Ortuzar, Bertol, Nando, Iriondo, Panizo, Zarra, Garatey Gainza.

With this victory, the lions added up another title to the showcase, and not only symbolically, but also physically. Athletic became the first team in the competition to own the championship trophy after winning the domestic championship five times.

During the same season, the red-and-white club achieved what would be their third doublet, winning the Cup against Real Madrid with a goal by Zarra, and becoming the only team to have achieved that mark so far.
