The legendary goalkeeper from Athletic Club played his first clash with the lions today, 69 years ago at San Mames
Today, 69 years ago, on 15 April 1951, one of the club’s most important red-and-white legends made his debut with the Club, Carmelo Cedrún. The goalkeeper, born in Amorebieta-Etxano, defended the red-and-white t-shirt for the first time during a match played at San Mamés against Sevilla FC. The lions won 3-0 thanks to the goals scored by Panizo, Iriondo and Zarra.
That match was followed by no less than 402 matches in 14 seasons, surpassing the 400 matches that only 18 lions have achieved in the history of Athletic Club. The goalkeeper won a League title (1955-56) and three Cups (1954-55, 1955-56 and 1957-58) during his time at San Mamés.
In addition, Cedrún held the record for the most consecutive matches played with Athletic in the League until this season, 132, achieved between 1952 and 1957. This record has only been broken by Iñaki Williams, who is currently playing for the 146th. Cedrún received an emotional tribute from the fans in San Mamés on December 1, 2019, before the game that faced the lions with Granada CF.
