91 years since the first Athletic – Real League match was played at San Mamés
In 1929, April 28, Athletic Club beat Real Sociedad 4-2
On this day, April 28, but 91 years ago, the old San Mamés stadium hosted the first of many derbies played in the League between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. In total, in the League derbys at San Mamés, our Club has added 39 victories, 20 draws and 14 defeats.
The score on this Matchday 10 was a victory by 4 goals to 2, thanks to Unamuno I’s double, and to both Juanín and Mandaluniz’s goals. Cholín and Kiriki scored for the Gipuzkoans.
Our team, led by the coach Máximo Royo, finished third in the League, behind FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, and precisely ahead of Real Sociedad; in the Cup we reached the semifinals but stayed on the brink of the grand final. The title that we conquered was the Regional Championship.
