104 years since the Cup of 1916
Athletic Club won Real Madrid CF by 4 goals to 0 in the final
Today marks 104 years since the Cup Athletic won against Real Madrid in Barcelona. The final started at 4.00 p.m. on May 7, 1916.
The initial goal scored by Domingo Gómez-Acedo and Félix Zubizarreta’s hat-trick allowed Athletic to lift the third Cup title in a row, after those achieved in 1914 against the already dissolved FC España de Barcelona (2-1) and in 1915 against RCD Espanyol (5-0). This merit has paired the conquest of our first physical Cup trophy.
Being exempt in the semifinals, Athletic was automatically classified for the final, while Real Madrid had to beat FC Barcelona to play it.
