2004: Two-time champions of the Super League

Today is the 16th anniversary of the celebration at San Mamés against Torrejón of the second consecutive league for a champion Athletic Club since the penultimate round

Just as they did on their Primera Division debut in 2002-2003, the lionesses were able to offer the red-and-white supporters at San Mamés their second consecutive Super League title. On May 16, 2004, the final round was played at The Cathedral, but it was not decisive, as the team led by Iñigo Juaristi had already won the title the previous round, when a 3-1 win against Corderex de Merida gave them the title.

With all the uncertainties cleared up, the 26th round of the Super League arrived; the final touch. Torrejón was for the first time at San Mamés and after the obligatory tribute to the bust of Pichichi, the team from Madrid made the hall of honour to Athletic Club. The match ended 0-2 thanks to the goals in the final minutes of Saray, with a powerful left-footed shot from outside the area and Jade Boho, today’s striker in the EDF Logroño of the Primera Iberdrola.

Party in San Mamés

When the final whistle was heard, nothing was left but to celebrate the League title. Nerea Onaindia, the red-and-white captain, went up to the presidential box to receive the championship trophy from Angel María Villar, president of the RFEF. On the field, the celebration with thousands of athletic supporters. Without a big win like against Hispalis, but with great joy. The women’s team had an unstoppable rhythm in the elite of women’s football, setting a high standard for the generations to come.

Although the last match was not exciting in sporting terms, the development of the competition was vibrant. The lionesses finished in first position with 60 points, two points more than Sabadell and Levante. Juaristi had to fight it, because with five rounds left, they managed to overtake Sabadell, who were five points ahead of the team from Bilbao. Athletic’s final stretch was spectacular, with seven consecutive wins to be proclaimed champions again
