Today, 70 years ago, in 1950, Athletic defeated Real Valladolid by 4-1 in the final of the Cup (Copa del Rey) held in Chamartin (Madrid) and it became the18th Cup title of Athletic Cup. The lions had won their previous title five years earlier, in June 1945, after beating Valencia CF by 3-2 in Montjuic (Barcelona).

Athletic ruled most of the match thanks to Zarra’s goal in the minute 14, but Coque scored in the minute 85 and the match had to be decided during the extra time. It was then when Zarra scored another three goals (minutes 94, 96 and 116) becoming the author of the 4 red-and-white valuable goals of the final. Out of the 27 goals Athletic scored that year in the competition, 13 were scored by Zarra, who managed to score in 6 out of the 7 matches played in the tournament.
