The eight goals scored by Iraragorri against Alavés

90 years since the achievement accomplished by the Athletic Club player

On June 9, 1930, exactly 90 years ago today, the player of Athletic Club José Iraragorri managed to score eight goals in the 8-2 victory over Deportivo Alavés in the friendly match that took place in Bergara. The game was played once ended the League that our club won.

Curiously, the idyll between our former footballer and the team from Vitoria-Gasteiz continued throughout the 1930s: at the 1933/34 Regional Championship, San Mamés witnessed an 8-0 victory with a hat-trick by Iraragorri, who the following season in the same competition, also against Deportivo Alavés, scored seven goals in the final 10-0.

José Iraragorri Ealo was born in Basauri on March 16, 1912, and died in Galdakao on April 27, 1983. Nicknamed ‘El Chato’, he played for Athletic Club for ten seasons. With 179 goals in 240 matches and an incredible ratio of 0.75 goals per game, he occupies 5th place in the ranking of historical scorers of our club. As a player, he won five Regional Championships, four Leagues and four Cups.

Member of the first Athletic Club’s mythical forward, along with Lafuente, Bata, Chirri II and Gorostiza, after his retirement he made a career as a coach and occupied our bench, winning in 1950 the Cup and the Eva Duarte Cup.
