On January 27, 2019, Athletic and Real Betis competed at San Mamés in the 21st matchday of LaLiga 2018-19. That Sunday it was raining in Bilbao but 40,282 fans enjoyed the victory of the lions. The captain, Iker Muniain, scored the winning goal in the first half of the match, in the 20th minute.

Betis started the match dominating but the lions soon took control, ending with a great goal by Iker Muniain after an assist from De Marcos. A one goal advantage that was maintained for the remaining 70 minutes and would be enough to secure a home win.

De Marcos was sent off due to a red card in the 83rd minute after a tackle on Sidnei, and Athletic had to play the last 10 minutes with one man less. The lions were able to maintain the result and ended up with the victory and the three points. With the winning against the team from Sevilla, Athletic achieved its seventh consecutive day without losing (4 wins and 3 draws).
