International LGBTQI Pride Day

The exterior of San Mamés Stadium, lit in rainbow colours

San Mamés is commemorating the anniversary of the uprising that took place on 28 June 1969, when the gay community confronted the police who were routinely raiding the Stonewall Inn in New York, and protested against the position of the American government towards sexual diversity.

On June 28 the following year, the first Pride parade was held, with many of the participants spontaneously marching on the streets of New York. It has been 50 years since that first step was taken, a movement later imitated in Los Angeles and subsequently joined by other cities of the world.
