Athletic Club failed to accomplish their objective of getting a European position but, despite the setbacks suffered in LaLiga last week -with 6 goals conceded against Leganés and Granada-, they have completed a campaign with a remarkable defensive performance.
Gaizka Garitano’s side have conceded a total of 38 goals in the domestic competition, a number that means Athletic have set their best record in this respect in the 21st century so far. Until now, it was the squads managed by Enesto Valverde in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons who were the previous record holders -with 39 and 41 goals conceded, ending in 4th and 7thposition respectively-.
Athletic Club are also one of the sides who have leaked the fewest goals in the 38 league matches this season, levelling with FC Barcelona in fifth position and sitting behind Real Madrid (25), Atlético de Madrid (27), Sevilla (34) and Getafe (35). The six goals conceded last week prevented the lions from being placed third in this statistical ranking, a position they had occupied for the major part of the season.
