Athletic Club Women are off to a fantastic start in the Primera Iberdrola, they are still unbeaten with two wins and a draw in the first three games. It is a great start that goes hand in hand with that of striker Lucía García, who has scored three goals in her first two games. The Spain international did not take part in the season opener against Deportivo Abanca, but was involved in the last two fixtures. The forward scored a brace against Sevilla and hit the back of the net again on Sunday when Athletic took on Real Betis at Lezama. It is the first time the no.17 has kicked off the season by scoring three goals in such a short space of time.
At the moment, the lioness finds herself in second place on the Primera Iberdrola goalscorers’ leaderboard, only one goal behind current frontrunner Esther, Levante’s striker who has four goals.
Twenty-three goals in the last two years
Lucía García arrived at Lezama in September 2016 and made a goalscoring debut against Fundación Albacete. García went on to score five goals in total that season. The following season she improved, this time bagging seven times (four in the league and three in the cup). In the 2018-19, she scored a brace against Real Sociedad in the third match of the season and hit a personal best of 13 goals in a season. In 2019-20, before the lockdown, Lucía was on track to beat her personal best once more. She was on 10 goals (nine in the league and one in the cup) before play was brought to a halt.
