Dominant Lionesses defeat Madrid CFF
Athletic beat Madrid CFF 2-0 and move into the European spots thanks to goals by Lucía García and María Díaz
Athletic Club Women are unbeaten after the first five matches of Primera Iberdrola 2020-21. The lionesses defeated Madrid CFF 2-0 in a match which saw the first division’s two in form teams face off.
A goal each from Lucía García and María Díaz were enough to see Athletic coast to a dominant victory over the Madrid outfit and move into third place, behind FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Athletic now have 11 points from a possible 15.
The match started at a frightening pace with a lot of intensity. The visiting side came to Bilbao looking for points and controlled the match in some moments, but Athletic’s defensive line was solid and Andrea de la Nava was barely called upon.
Chances were few and far between for both sides in the first half, Athletic’s best opportunity a powerful María Díaz strike that missed the target.
It was Lucía García who broke the deadlock for the lionesses, she took advantage of a defensive mistake and gave the home team the lead in the 42nd minute.
Shortly after the restart, Madrid could have got the equaliser but Cantuario’s shot went over the bar. Lucía García looked for Athletic’s second but her tame effort was easily stopped by Madrid’s keeper.
The lionesses second goal came in the 74th minute. María Díaz finished off a fine strategic corner with a spectacular long-range effort.
Díaz’s goal saw Athletic move into cruise-control. Monente could have added another to the scoresheet but her strike was turned around for a corner. Eventually, the match petered out and the lionesses took the win.
Athletic’s fine start to the campaign continues, and the side look confident heading into a demanding November. There’s no rest for the wicked, as Villacampa’s squad travel to Barcelona this Sunday to face RCD Espanyol at 12:15 CET.
