Garitano: “It’s important to get points at San Mamés”

The boss previews Athletic’s upcoming LaLiga Santander match against Real Betis

Athletic Club manager Gaizka Garitano has said the lions are keen to put together a winning streak at San Mamés by taking three points against Real Betis on Monday (21:00 CET).
The lions are undefeated in their past two matches at San Mamés and another win will go some way to turning the stadium into a fortress again.
“We’ve won our past two home matches,” Garitano said at his pre-match press conference in Lezama. “We played a good match against Levante and had a great second half against Sevilla. “It’s important to get points at San Mamés, even without the help of the fans.”
The Andalusians are currently 10th in the LaLiga Santander table and a victory for Athletic on Monday will see the lions move level on 12 points with Betis.
“The team wants to win,” Garitano added. “We want to have the same number of points as Betis.
“They’ve got one win more than us and there’s a lot of evenly-matched teams in that part of the table.”
Garitano analysed Athletic’s opponents and stressed that his side will have to remain alert throughout the 90 minutes.
“Betis are very good technically and they move the ball well,” he said. “It’s something which means will have to pay attention in the press.
“Defensively they’re suffering at the moment and that’s something we must take advantage of.”
The manager signed off by reiterating the importance of being accurate in both boxes.
“The easiest thing is to work on organisation and the structure of play so that we are balanced,” Garitano said.
“But it’s difficult to improve accuracy in the boxes. In eight matches, our opponents have scored with practically every chance they’ve had.
“We have to be more accurate and effective, as well as being more precise with the final ball in order to create more clear chances on goal.”
