Athletic Club midfielder Mikel Vesga has said that the entire squad is fully motivated to beat Getafe CF and pick up consecutive LaLiga Santander victories for the first time in 2020-21
The lions, currently eighth placed, travel to Madrid and the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Sunday (kick-off, 16:15 CET) for their 10th LaLiga match of the season.
“You can see the team really wants to get another win and doesn’t want repeat what has happened in previous weeks,” Vesga said during a press conference at Lezama. “The only plan we’re going with is to get the three points and play well in Getafe. A good result would be an incredible morale boost.”
The central midfielder made only his second start of the season in last week’s 4-0 win over Betis and was widely praised for his performance in the middle of the park at San Mamés, Vesga is hopeful it will lead to more starts but is concentrating on doing what he can to help the team.
“All players want minutes and to be able to compete,” Vesga said of his playing time. “The most important thing is to be mentally and physically prepared to be at the right level when you’re called upon.
“In the last match, like the rest of the team, I played well and we’re all keen to put together a run of good form together.”
Vesga added that the dominant manner of the victory against Real Betis should help the Lions going forward.
“It’s a good win in many ways,” he continued. “Firstly, because it was necessary. But it’s also helped us realise we’re capable of playing great matches and it helped us understand what we have to do to win more games.
“We’re going to Getafe convinced that we can get the three points.”
