The women’s first team, with the Primera Iberdrola postponed in March due to COVID-19, had spent three weeks in a training camp.
In a chance encounter with Garazi Murua, Ane suffered a serious injury. After hearing the loud, crunching sound in her knee, Ane knew straight away that she was in trouble.
Subsequent tests confirmed her suspicions. She was sent to Navarre to see a specialist and undergo surgery for a ruptured cruciate ligament in her right knee.
After the operation in July and “getting a new knee for her birthday”, Ane hasn’t done much but follow the Club’s Medical Services’ instructions ever since.
Her leg has gotten stronger and she can now jog around Lezama’s pitches, but always with a long look at her dearly missed teammates.
“When you’re injured, you always become a little bit isolated,” the Athletic striker said. “But I’ve learnt a lot about myself from this situation. I know my body better, as well as Athletic Club’s physios and doctors.”
The forward is progressing positively in terms of her recovery and, without a doubt, her return in the final stretch of the Primera Iberdrola campaign will greatly strengthen the lionesses.
Azkona is never without a smile on her face and has chosen a very recommendable “philosophy” when it comes to overcoming any obstacle life puts in her way.
