Athletic Club head-coach Gaizka Garitano has stressed the need to start winning consecutive matches.
The Lions travel down to Madrid to face Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez (Sun. 16:15 CET) and will be looking to notch consecutive wins for the first time in their 2020-21 LaLiga Santander campaign.
“We’re coming off the back of a run where we win one, then lose the next,” Garitano said at his pre-match press conference in Lezama. “We need to win again and put two consecutive victories together.
“That’s what really makes a win good. This is what all the teams want, but it’s difficult to achieve in the First Division.”
Athletic are currently eighth in a very tight LaLiga Santander table. Three more points could see the Lions move further towards the European spots.
At the moment only two points separate Athletic and sixth-placed Granada.
“It’s usually always like this at the beginning of the season,” Garitano added. “A win one week can put you towards the top and a loss the next week can put you towards the bottom.
“We’re not looking at the table, we’re looking at the day-to-day, at the work in Lezama.
“We fully trust the work the team is doing and we’re sure it will bring positive results.”
Garitano is conscious that Sunday’s opponents Getafe CF will ensure the match is a completely different sort of match to that of this past Monday’s fixture against Real Betis.
“Getafe are a tough and competitive team, one of the hardest to beat in LaLiga,” Garitano concluded.
“They’ve had some good seasons and they make things difficult for every opponent.
“We know what we have to do, we’ve worked well on it and we’re going for a second consecutive win with everything we’ve got.”
