Athletic Club manager Gaizka Garitano reiterated that the lions are solely focused on defeating Elche CF in this Sunday’s LaLiga Santander fixture at San Mamés (January 3, 14:00 CET).

Three points against the LaLiga Santander 2020-21 newcomers would be the perfect way to start 2021, and could potentially see the lions move into the top half of the table.

“It’s a match we need to win,” Garitano said at his pre-match press conference. “We’ve got victory on our minds, we’re only thinking about beating Elche.”

Elche drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in their latest match and have been something of a surprise package so far in 2020-21.

“We must play with patience against Elche,” Garitano added. “They’re a team who like to sit back and counter-attack.

“We’ll have to work hard to avoid their counters. They’ve made life difficult for many of their opponents recently but we have to play our own game.”

With only three days having passed since Athletic faced Real Sociedad, Garitano said the busy schedule has left the lions with no time to feel sorry for themselves.

“Playing every three day means there’s no time to celebrate wins or feel sad when you lose,” he explained. “We have to keep going. We’re ready and raring to play tomorrow.”
