Since the Copa del Rey final in 2008-09, Athletic Club have played in eight finals.
That specific night, May 13, 2009, Barça defeated Athletic Club 1-4 at Mestalla to win the Copa.
In the following season, 2009-10, the two teams faced off in the Spanish Super Cup. The Lions, managed by Joaquin Capparós, were unable to win the trophy, falling to defeat in Barcelona and in Bilbao.
The Lions went for two trophies in 2011-12. They took on FC Barcelona in the Vicente Calderón for the Copa and their Europa League final against Atletico Madrid took place in Bucharest. Athletic fell to 0-3 losses on both occasions.
Three seasons later, in 2014-15, the Rojiblancos reached the final of the Copa once more, and once more they battled it out with FC Barcelona for the trophy. The Catalans took the silverware after beating Athletic at the Camp Nou.
Just before the 2015-16 campaign kicked-off, the Lions played FC Barcelona for the Supercopa and ended a 31 year wait for a trophy, defeating Barça 5-1 on aggregate across the two legs.
.Led by Ernesto Valverde, the Lions steamrolled Barça 4-0 in the first leg in Bilbao, with Mikel San Jose scoring a goal from the halfway line and Aritz Aduriz bagging a hat-trick.
At the Camp Nou, Athletic drew 1-1 to ensure Bilbao was truly painted red and white by fans.
This year, Athletic Club will play in two finals. The first takes place this Sunday at 21:00 CET, when the Lions face FC Barcelona in the Supercopa 2021.
The second is the 2019-20 all-Basque Copa final between Athletic and Real Sociedad, which was supposed to be played on April 18, 2020, but was eventually postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
