Marcelino: “A victory for us would’ve been fair”

Marcelino bemoaned the defensive mistakes that led to Levante’s goal

Athletic Club manager Marcelino believes his side deserved more from their 1-1 draw with Levante UD at the Ciutat de Valéncia.

The Lions went behind in the first-half after Roger Marti scored from the spot, but forward Rául García ensured Athletic picked up a point when he also converted a penalty in the 55th minute.

“A victory for us would’ve been fair,” Marcelino said during his post-match press conference. “We shoudn’t have let the victory escape us.

“In my opinion, one team did a lot more than the other.

“In general terms, I’m happy but in the little that came our way we made big mistakes and we didn’t have enough luck in front of goal.”

When asked about the errors that led to Levante’s goal, Marcelino said: “To be consistent and competitive we can’t let that happen.

“We have to concentrate better and give much more importance to each action.

Athletic face Levante again on Thursday night, as the two sides battle it out for a place in the Copa del Rey final.

He said: “Now we need to recuperate and think about that match. These are two completely different matches.”
