Marcelino analysed Athletic’s narrow loss at the Wanda Metropolitano
Marcelino García Toral insisted that Athletic Club deserved at least a point from their 2-1 loss to Atlético Madrid on Wednesday night.
Athletic took an early lead via captain Iker Muniain, but Atlético struck back with goals from Marcos Llorente and Luis Suárez to take all three points.
“I’m satisfied with the team’s performance, but sad because of the result,” Marcelino said during his post-match press conference.
“We did enough to get a point against the leaders. It’s a pity.
“They’re [Atlético] very effective and they demonstrated that because we gave them very little.”
The boss was particularly impressed with the way Athletic dominated the match, saying: “We were almost perfect and they equalised against the run of play.
“We coped well in the second half, but their goal gave them what they needed to hang on and close out the match.
“We deserved something for our efforts, but it wasn’t to be.”
