The road to the second final (V): Levante UD

An Athletic Club fightback, led by Raúl García and Berenguer, saw the Lions qualify for the final

The semi-final second leg clash took place at the Ciutat de València on March 4. After the match at San Mamés, the aggregate score was 1-1 and this leg would go to the wire.

The match soon became an uphill struggle for the Lions. Despite Athletic having chances to take the lead early on, Levante went ahead after Roger Marti scored in the 17th minute. Thanks to Levante’s away goal, Athletic would now need to mount a comeback to progress to the final.

The equaliser came from the spot. Oscar Duarte fouled Rául García in the box and the no.22 stood up and dispatched the subsequent penalty. With the scores level, everything was up in the air once again, both teams pushd but neither could find a goal and the tie went to extra-time.

Winger Alex Berenguer got the winner in the 112th minute. The summer signing took aim from the edge of the box and took a deflection off Nikola Vukcevic before going in off the post.

Berenguer’s goal was enough to ensure Athletic’s place in the Copa 2020-21 final. FC Barcelona would be waiting in Seville on April 17.
