The Lionesses lose to Real Madrid
Despite the Lionesses’ final push, the visitors picked up all three points with a 1-3 win
Athletic Club Women lost 1-3 to Real Madrid in what was the visitors’ first ever visit to Lezama. David Aznar’s side were 0-2 up by the break, and although the Lionesses fought back in the latter stages of the match, the lead was unassailable.
Real Madrid came out flying. Athletic tried to ward off the danger, but couldn’t prevent Asllani from opening the scoring in the 11th minute.
Unable to respond, the Lionesses conceded again when Cardona struck from outside the box in the 24th minute. The Rojiblancas were simply not able to get going against a Real Madrid side that was on top of their game in the first half.
Real Madrid extended their lead shortly after the break. The Lionesses weren’t quick enough to close down Aurelie Kaci, who scored with a long-range effort.
In the 53rd minute, Lucía García pulled on back for Athletic, getting on the end of a Marta Unzué delivery from the right flank.
Kenti Robles forced Andrea de la Nava into a good save in the 60th minute.
In the 80th minute, Monente tried her luck with a effort that Madrid keeper Misa sent for a corner. Time was running out for Athletic, and while they pressed for a goal, they had no luck.
It’s time to turn the page after a tough week and prepare for June, the last month of competition in the Primera Iberdrola.
