The Champions’ Cup, live on Youtube Athletic

Athletic Club will offer live coverage of the complete quarter-final between our Under-18s and Málaga CF. The first leg: Sunday at 12:00 CEST.

Athletic’s official Youtube channel will be live broadcasting the Copa de Campeones (Champions’ Cup) quarter-finals between Athletic Club Under-18s and Málaga CF Under-18s (June 13 and June 20). The first leg will be played this weekend at La Academia de Málaga, on Sunday at 12:00 CEST, and you can watch it live on the Club’s Youtube channel.

The tie will be played over two legs, with the first match being played in Malaga and the second in Lezama. The winner of the tie will advance to the ‘Final Four’, which will consist of one-legged matches at a single venue (yet to be determined) between 24 and 27 June.

The team coached by Imanol de la Sota will compete alongside the seven best teams in Spain with the intention of lifting the trophy for the first time and qualifying for the UEFA Youth League, a competition in which Athletic already reached in the 2014-15 season after the first team qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

Track record in the competition

The Copa de Campeones, which was first held in the 1994-95 and annually determines the best Under-18s side in the state, is a trophy that no Athletic Under-18 side has ever won.

The last time the Under-18s team were crowned the best youth team in Spain dates back to the 1991-92 season, but the competition had a different name and format. Back then it was known as “Liga de Honor” and only contained clubs whose senior team participated in the First Division. Athletic’s squad featuring a young Julen Guerrero lifted the League and also the Under-18s Copa del Rey, achieving a prestigious double in that campaign.

Other contenders

Alongside Athletic Club and Málaga CF, Deportivo de la Coruña, UD Las Palmas, Atlético de Madrid, Levante UD and the yet to be determined winner of Group III, which will be decided on Thursday between FC Barcelona, Espanyol and Zaragoza, as well as the best runner-up from the seven groups, Real Madrid CF, will also take part in this year’s edition.
