Athletic Club shows racism the red card

The aim of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign is to promote diversity and social cohesion as well as reducing physical and verbal violence linked to racism

Athletic Club has joined the Show Racism the Red Card (SRTRC) campaign, with the Lions holding up red cards alongside members of the women’s first team and the Genuine squad in the team photo taken before Saturday night’s fixture against Villarreal CF. The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness surrounding diversity in addition to promoting social cohesion and reducing physical and verbal violence linked to racism.

The campaign is promoted by the European Football for Development Network (EFDN), an organisation that unites football clubs, leagues and federations across Europe with the aim of working for social improvement through football.

Just before Athletic Club vs Villarreal CF kicked off, the first team players, accompanied by representatives of Athletic Club Women and Athletic Club Genuine, posed with red cards sporting the words ‘Muéstrale la Tarjeta Roja al Racismo’, ‘Erakutsiozu Txartel Gorria Arrazakeriari’ and ‘Show Racism the Red Card’.

Show Racism the Red Card (SRTRC) is an anti-racism and anti-discrimination programme working in several European countries. The EFDN is using the influence and celebrity of footballers to help combat racism in society.

The main objectives are to promote diversity, tolerance and social cohesion, reduce physical and verbal violence linked to racism, raise awareness surrounding the negative impact of racism on individuals, produce European media campaigns and interact with clubs and sports organisations as well as creating high quality, comprehensive and transferable educational resources.

The Athletic Club Foundation is part of EFDN and our Cultural Project was among the nominated for the 2021 More than Football Award, which recognises social initiatives linked to football.
