A year of Marcelino at Athletic Club
The first 365 days with Marcelino in the Athletic dugout
Exactly one year has passed since Marcelino García Toral was appointed Athletic Club’s head coach. The deal to bring the Asturias-born coach to Bilbao was first announced on January 3 and a day later it was made official.
On that same day Marcelino and his coaching staff oversaw their first training session at Lezama. Marcelino’s team includes: Rubén Uría (assistant coach), Ismael Fernández (fitness coach), Sergio García (assistant fitness coach), and Bruno Uría (analyst).
The head coach, who wasn’t present at El Sadar on Monday night due to testing positive for COVID-19, has led the Lions in 49 official matches so far.
Over the course of the last 365 days, Marcelino and Athletic fans all over the world have experienced some special moments together, starting with victories over Real Madrid and FC Barcelona to become the 2021 Spanish Super Cup champions, a feat achieved barely 13 days after the head coach arrived.
The Lions also went on an exhilarating Copa del Rey run, defeating the likes of Real Betis and Levante UD as they reached the final for a second consecutive year.
After his first pre-season in charge of the team, Marcelino is in the midst of his first full season in the Athletic dugout. And, a year after his arrival, the Lions face another demanding and exciting January. There’s a Super Cup title to defend, a new journey in the Copa and Europe on the horizon in LaLiga.
