Iñigo Martínez reiterated that Athletic can compete against their Supercopa rivals: “The wonderful thing is there are no favourites in this Supercopa.”
Athletic Club central defender Iñigo Martínez insisted the Lions are just as capable of winning the Spanish Super Cup as any of the other three teams in the tournament.
The Bilbao-based side kick off the defence of the Supercopa trophy with a semi-final tie against current LaLiga champions Atlético Madrid at the King Fahd Stadium on Thursday night (20:00 CET).
“In a one-off game, anyone can win,” Iñigo said at a pre-match press conference. “We’ve shown we know how to compete against these teams. If we’re at 100 percent we can take on any of them.”
As for Thursday’s opponents, Atlético Madrid, Iñigo warned Diego Simeone’s side should not be underestimated even if they are not in the form of their lives.
He said: “There’s no such thing as an easy match against Atlético. They’re like us in that they’ll keep fighting until the very end. Although it might seem like this isn’t their best year, we’re all here to win this trophy.
“They’re going to give it everything, but so are we.”
