Erika Vázquez: A Record-Breaking Lioness
The striker, who turns 39 today, has had a very special week in which she became the Lionesses’ all-time top appearance maker
It has been an intense week for Athletic Club Women, having faced Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona, but one name has been on everybody’s lips: Erika Vázquez.
Last Wednesday, the striker, who turns 39 today, overtook Eli Ibarra (413) as the Lionesses’ all-time official appearance maker. Erika was in the starting XI against Atletico Madrid, breaking the record set by her great friend.
Along with her 17 seasons at the Club, and being the Club’s second highest goal scorer in history with 263 strikes, only behind Telmo Zarra, Erika just keeps on going. She never tires of setting up goals or scoring them herself.
“Athletic have given me everything and I feel very fortunate and proud to have been able to pull on this shirt for so many years years,” Erika said at a post-match press conference after the victory over Atlético last week.
After the landmark achievement came the accolades, both at San Mamés during the men’s team’s Copa semi-final, as well as at Lezama. In the following ZOOM you can see all the best moments from a week that Erika will never forget.
