Berenguer: “I’m at my best level right now”

Álex Berenguer says qualifying for Europe is possible, confirming the Lions have their “minds set on that”

Athletic Club midfielder Álex Berenguer believes his recent performances show he is hitting his peak in terms of form.

The winger set up two goals during Athletic’s 3-1 win over Levante UD on Monday, saying he is feeling increasingly confident on the pitch.

“The coach asks me to be direct and to put a lot of crosses into the box. I think I’m at my best level right now,” Berenguer said in a pre-match press conference ahead of Athletic’s trip to the Benito Villamarin where they will face Real Betis on Sunday at 16:15 CET.

“I haven’t been able to show it until recently, but now I have to continue like this, I don’t set myself targets and I’m not obsessed with goals or assists.”

The no.7 feels himself and the team have taken things up a level since the turn of the year, citing the win over Osasuna in January as a catalyst.

What’s more, he admitted the three points gained against Levante “were important, especially after the setback in the Copa semi-final”.

“The team is doing things very well and winning is the best way to pick yourself up,” he added.

“You can see it in the results, we’re on a very good run. We have 11 games left and we have to try to get as many points as possible. We have to go game by game, and only think about getting the three points each time.

“We’ve got all the time in the world left to get into Europe and we’ve got our minds set on that.”
