Athletic to face FSV Mainz 05 and VFL Bochum in pre-season camp in Germany

The first team will spend the second fortnight of July in Germany, where they will play four friendly matches

Athletic Club will hold their 2022/23 pre-season training camp in Germany. The Lions will play four friendly matches in the country between July 16 and 23, three of those fixtures coming against sides in the Bundesliga.

In addition to the confirmed games against Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg, Los Rojiblancos will take on VFL Bochum and FSV Mainz 05, clubs which finished eighth and 13th in the German top-flight last season, respectively.

The Lions will kick off their stay in Germany with the Cup of Traditions at Duisburg’s Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena on Sunday July 17. The mini three-team tournament will consist of 45-minute matches against Borussia Mönchengladbach (17:00 CEST) and hosts MSV Duisburg (18:00 CEST).

After the competition has finished, Athletic will travel to their training camp in Harsewinkel, a small town in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It should be a familiar place for most of the squad, as they were also stayed there for 2019 pre-season under former manager Gaizka Garitano.

On Thursday July 21, Athletic will then head to nearby Gütersloh, where they will play VFL Bochum at the Heidewaldstadion at 18:00 CEST.

On the Friday, Los Rojiblancos will leave their base camp in Harsewinkel and fly to Mainz, where they will face local side Mainz 05 at the Mewa Arena on Saturday at 17:00 CEST.

The Lions will travel back to Bilbao after the match.
