Valverde: “This is an important test of our ambition”

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde said the Lions' upcoming clash with Cadiz CF will be an "important test".

Los Rojiblancos are undefeated and have yet to concede after their first two LaLiga fixtures, but this visit to the Nuevo Mirandilla (20:00 CEST) is their first away day of the season.

"Cádiz need three points. It's true that they haven't won yet, but in those two games there were moments when they played really well," Valverde said.

"They finished last season well, they've suffered a lot of physical setbacks with important players. As they need to kickstart their campaign, we're expect a side that will be out to get us. It will be a very important test of our ambition, because it's our first time away from home this season."

The Gaffer made it clear his side will not be shifting too far from their basic tactical structure for away matches.

"We have a way of playing and the intention will always be to apply that style both at our ground and in away matches. Three points at home are worth as much as three points away," he said.

"Generally, Athletic have always been very strong at San Mamés. We have to try and transfer that strength to our away games. Our ambition must always be to get the three points, no matter where we're playing."

Valverde said Ander Herrera's arrival is a big plus for the squad thanks to the midfielder's "experience playing at big clubs".

He added: "Ander is a player we know well. We think he can help us a lot. He has experience playing matches at big clubs and he is aware of the pressure that comes with having to win week in week out.

"He's also aware of what we demand here and we're happy we'll have a player of his stature. Ander is going to offer us a lot both on and off the pitch. His way of playing will be very useful for us and the team will be stronger now he's here. Nevertheless, he's going to find tough competition for a place with this squad."
