In the build-up to Athletic Club vs Villarreal CF, the surrounding areas of San Mamés will become a fan zone with activities, live music, food and much more
On Sunday from 12:00 CET* onwards, in the lead-up to Athletic's LaLiga Santander match against Villarreal CF, the promenade around San Mamés will turn into a traditional Basque town-square, where Athleticzales can celebrate belonging to one of the most unique clubs in the world.
Under the name 'Athletic Plaza', this new matchday tradition will include a wide range of activities for all ages: live music, games, amazing food and drink, plus much more!
San Mamés' surrounding concourse will be transformed, dividing itself into into two areas. Both sections will be connected by a row of eight food trucks.
The Music Zone
The area to the right of San Mamés as you walk up from Pozas will be dedicated to gastronomy and music. There will be a large stall serving food and drink next to the 'San Miguel Stage', where local rock group Gatibu will give an acoustic performance at 13:30.
Before and after Gatibu's set, DJ Oihan Vega and the acoustic duo 'Eley' will be tasked with building up the atmosphere in this section of Athletic Plaza.
Activities Zone
The area next to the University of the Basque Country's School of Engineering will host activities mainly aimed at younger children, such as: human table football, PlayStation, inflatable slides, face painting and badge making.
Next to the Athletic Club Foundation arch there will be a stand where you can sign up and collect a wristband granting access to all of the activities in the area.
Getting a wristband will allow automatic participation in a series of prize draws: a double ticket for San Mames BAT (VIP), five visits for two people to see the new facilities at Lezama, three exclusive experiences to see a Matchday from the inside (for two people), two double tickets for a match in general seating, three double tickets to the AC Museum, plus giveaways including products from the official shop.
In this section there will also be a special Club Athletic tent, a photo booth with an Athletic inspired back canvas, and a charity area with Koopera (to donate clothes), the Food Bank (to donate food) and the Basque Transfusion and Human Tissue Centre together with the Basque Blood Donors' Association (to donate blood).
Three-a-side football tournament
Between 12:00 and 14:30, Athletic Club Foundation's "Bombonera", a small field of 10x15 metres, will host the 'Audiogroup three-a-side football championships' for people over 16 years old. Sixteen teams will be drawn from the registered trios to compete in the tournament. Sign up here. (Form in Spanish)
Once this tournament for over 16s has finished, the "Bombonera" will be free for little ones to play football in.
'Athletic Plaza' Concept
'Athletic Plaza' is an area open to the whole city at the very centre of the pre-match festivities on game days, between Calle Licenciado Poza (and the surrounding area) and San Mamés.
It is a place where Athleticzales, tourists and the general public can come together, feel at home and enjoy San Mamés' world-renowned pre-match atmosphere.
In short, it is a place where the principles and values associated with Athletic Club shine through, a place where the feeling of being part of one of the most unique clubs in the world prevails.
