Popular Basque song "Ikusi Mendizaleak" to be played at San Mames
It will be sung minutes before the start of Saturday's derby against Real Sociedad
This Saturday at San Mamés, Athletic Club will pay tribute to Sabin López de Guereño, writer of the popular Basque anthem "Ikusi Mendizaleak" (Look at the Mountaineers).
The song will be played out at The Cathedral just before the start of our LaLiga match against Real Sociedad (16:15 CEST).
López de Guereño, who will be joined by his family, will sing the first few verses from The Cathedral's pitch with the thousands of fans in attendance as his backing singers.
We therefore politely ask those with tickets to arrive to the stadium ahead of time so they can also take part and sing "Ikusi Mendizaleak" together with Sabin.
The song, whose lyrics and melody were composed by Sabin López de Guereño in 1966, has become a popular symbol of Basque culture. More than five decades later, Athletic Club wants to pay special tribute to the writer of one of the most beloved songs in our land.
