Valverde: “We have to pick ourselves up straight away”

The gaffer challenged his side to respond after their 0-1 defeat against Sevilla at San Mames: "We have two very important games coming up in the space of three days"

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde has insisted "there is no time for regrets", saying his Lions need to move on from Thursday's 0-1 defeat against Sevilla FC as soon as possible.

Los Leones were unfortunate to lose, with Lucas Ocampos scoring from the spot after being brought down in the box by Yeray, who had slipped while receiving a pass from Unai Simón but seemed to touch the ball as he tackled Ocampos.

"The end was surprising. The match was going to end as a goalless draw because neither team was creating any danger in the closing stages. We made a big mistake and we paid for it," Valverde said in his post-match press conference.

Valverde pointed to the encouraging signs from Athletic's display in the first half, saying: "We were constantly dangerous, but we had two goals disallowed for offside by a few millimetres. The second half was more even, because they settled down and are a very strong team. Even so, they didn't trouble us"

The Zurigorri have the weekend to recover from this setback before they go again, travelling to Mallorca to face Javier Aguirre's side, and Valverde is hoping to see an immediate reaction.

He added: “Tomorrow we train and on Monday we have a very tough game in Mallorca. In the space of three days we will play two very important matches."
