After recently signing a new contract, centre-back Yeray has committed his long-term future to Athletic Club and will be staying until 2026 at least. The player from Barakaldo is Athletic through-and-through and first came to Lezama as a fourteen-year-old.
He won a battle against testicular cancer in 2017-18 and came back even stronger. Despite the strong competition for places at the heart of Athletic’s defence, Yeray’s name tends to be one the of the first on the team sheet.
He’s a very technical player, he can play out of the back and is comfortable receiving the ball at feet in dangerous situations. As a defender, he is extremely intelligent, what he might lack in size or strength compared to some of his opponents he more than makes up for in his reading of the game, he always seems to be one step ahead mentally.
Since making his first-team debut in 2016-17, Yeray has made a total of 116 appearances so far. Now he’s just waiting for his first goal in the red-and-white shirt.
Yeray personifies Athletic Club’s core values: hard-work, sacrifice and humility. For this reason, he’s a role-model to all Athletic Club youngsters.
