Iñaki Williams: “The aim is to win our last five matches”

The Ghanaian international is desperate to make up for last week's defeat and believes Athletic can get back to winning ways this Saturday

Iñaki Williams said Athletic Club must treat their five remaining five fixtures as if they were all finals, stressing the players must go into each match with the desire and hunger to take all three points.

Last Thursday's loss to Real Betis was a big setback for Athletic's European ambitions, but the dream is not dead yet. This Saturday at 18:30 CEST, the Lions visit the Estadio de la Ceramica where they will take on a direct rival for a European spot in the form of Villarreal CF.

"The defeat against Betis was a huge blow, not only for the team, but also for the fans," Williams said at a press conference on Wednesday.

"There are 15 points left, five games, and we have the courage and the mindset to win them. On Saturday we play another direct rival. It will be very difficult, but we're going to try to take all three points. The team is doing well and we have confidence in the coach and in what we do."

Athletic are eighth in the LaLiga standings on 47 points, while Betis are sixth with 52 points and Villarreal fifth with 54 points. A win on Saturday could cut that gap and put Los Leones right back in the fight for a Europa League spot.

Iñaki said: “We shouldn't settle for less, we have to aim for the Europa League. We let some opportunities slip through our fingers and we're annoyed because we know we could've taken important steps forward.

"But if there's one thing this team does, it's that it always gets back up again. We're going to do everything possible to qualify. That's was objective set at the beginning of the season and that's what we all want."

Our no.9 reiterated how important Athletic fans will be in helping the Lions acheive their goals, saying: "We have to regain the supporters' confidence. We want them to see that we are still fighting and battling.

"We've never lacked support, the fans have always answered the call and been there for us. Even with these difficult kick-off times, they've always stood by us and I think that will continue to be the case until the end of the season. We need to get that enthusiasm going again."
