Erandio's have played their home matches at the fabled Campo de Ategorri since 1918. The club's trophy cabinet is equally impressive, containing 14 amateur championships, two Copas de Bizkaia and the 1933 National Amateur Championship.
Zarra's beginnings
The reconstruction of Erandio after the war led to new young players joining the club. Some of them would achieve international fame in a very short time. In the 1939-400 season, Erandio signed a certain 18-year-old boy. He came from a modest local team and went by the name of Telmo Zarraonaindia.
The centre-forward's sensational performances soon caught the attention of Athletic Club and, after some quick negotiations, Telmo Zarra joined his favourite club, where he played for 15seasons, making 354 appearances and scoring 335 goals.
In 1944, Erandio were proclaimed Tercera División champions with a team featuring Venancio Pérez, a young forward would also make the leap to Athletic Club. After several seasons in which Erandio were closing to achieving promotion to the Segunda División, they finally managed it in 1949.
After relegation the following year, Erandio were a staple in the Third Division until the 1980-81 season. Under the guidance of Blas Ziarreta, they were soon promoted to the Segunda División B. Ziarreta became an Athletic legend too, spending two decades at Lezama working in our academy.
SD Erandio currently have 17 teams of ranging across different age groups, and continue to play at Ategorri. On Saturday, September 9, they will take on Bermeo FT at home, with kick-off at 12:00 CEST.
