David Aznar: “We'll see a great Athletic”

The Lionesses' head coach is convinced they will give it everything to win the Basque Derby against Real Sociedad

Athletic Club Women head coach David Aznar described the Basque Derby as "a special match" as the Lionesses get ready to face rivals Real Sociedad at Lezama on Sunday at noon (12:00 CEST).

After the first five matches of the campaign, Athletic are 10th in Liga F with six points, while la Real are eighth with seven points.

"I've experienced derbies before and they are special. We know there's more than just three points on the line," Aznar said at his pre-match conference.

"Your form doesn't matter for much in these match because facing your rivals gives you a boost. We're determined to give it our all and we're sure we'll see a great Athletic."

Aznar reiterated that having a strong, vociferous crowd at Lezama on Sunday will be vital to the Lionesses' chances.

He added: "We need the fans with us in order to achieve our objective of being strong at Lezama. We represent a fan base, a philosophy and everything that surrounds it. We're approaching this game with a lot of enthusiasm and optimism."

After the slip-up against Villarreal, the gaffer is hopeful a positive performance will help Athletic recapture their best form.

"We know that we were far from our best, but this will be a very different game," he said. "This project wants to achieve much more and we are on the right track. The dressing room is eager to take a step forward."
