Valverde: "We want that need to win to become a habit"

The Athletic boss spoke to the press before our LaLiga clash against Sevilla FC

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde said mentality and attitude are key as he urged his players to make "needing to win a habit" ahead of Thursday's LaLiga clash with Sevilla FC in Andalusia.

The gaffer is hopeful the Zurigorri can extend their eight-match unbeaten run in the competition, a streak which goes as far back as October.

"The goal is to win tomorrow and on Sunday [against Eibar in the Copa]," Valverde said at his pre-match press conference.

"We want to start the new year on the right foot and maintain our good form. We have to make sure the need to win becomes a habit for us as it can really drive you forward."

Ernesto warned Athletic will "have to be prepared for any scenario" as they get set to face a new-look Sevilla under Quique Sánchez Flores, who took over at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán in December.

He said: "Quique Sánchez Flores knows his job and he knows how to make competitive teams. He's a great coach for Sevilla at a difficult time and you can expect them to become more competitive throughout the season. We've already seen that in their last two matches."
