All is set for a special night at Athletic Women take on FC Barcelona at The Cathedral in their semi-final first leg (Thursday 7, 19:00 CET)
A massive, historic night at San Mames, a major challenge for Athletic Club Women. This Thursday at 19:00 CET, The Cathedral will host FC Barcelona, current Women's Champions League champions, in the first leg of the Copa de la Reina semi-finals.
The Catalans have only dropped points in Liga F on one occasion this season, a draw against Levante UD. David Aznar's charges, afraid of nobody, come in to the clash in high spirits after two league wins in a row plus a two-week break to prepare.
"San Mames won't let us fall. It will be a very special day to promote women's sport and push for equality," the Athletic boss said in his pre-match press conference.
"It will be a beautiful moment for all of us there. It's a tie against a great team. We're going up against the best. Without a doubt, it's a great challenge and a great opportunity to improve."
Our fans were key to Athletic knocking out Madrid CFF at San Mamés and UD Tenerife at Lezama, and the Lionesses will need San Mames on Thursday night in Bilbao.
David Aznar's young side have knocked out three top-flight team en route to the semi-finals and deserve to fight for a place in the final round. Tickets cost between €5-€10, while Club Members can get theirs for free.
The star-studded Azulgrana, led by Golden Ball winner Aitana Bonmatí, will look to dictate the tempo and keep possession at all times. Athletic will attempt to keep their shape and spring a surprise at La Catedral.
The last meeting was a 0-4 loss at Lezama, although two of the goals came late on. But Thursday is another night to dream.
