Valverde: “This is a derby and we don't want to let people down”

This is what the gaffer had to say before Sunday's Basque Derby in Bilbao

Ernesto Valverde believes Sunday's LaLiga Basque Derby at San Mames (21:00) will be "an intense match", insisting his players will have to win their individual duels if they want to take victory.

Athletic Club currently sit sixth in the league table, while Donostia-based Real Sociedad are two points and two places behind in eighth.

"It's a derby and we don't want to let people down," Valverde said at his pre-match press conference.

"It's going to be an intense match, individual duels and how we press will be very important, Every 50-50 ball will be worth its weight in gold."

"We're expecting an incredible atmosphere at San Mames. It's another three points on the line, but at the same time the rivalry is always there and we want to win."

The international break has given players a chance to rest and recover, something which will come in vital with the busy schedule before the Christmas break.

The boss said: "We have tried to bring players back and give a bit of a rest to the players who were injured or had knocks.

"Especially as we now have a very intense run of matches between now and Christmas. So, on that note, the break has been positive."

Txingurri singled out la Real's defensive record and the fact they've only let in one goal this season when asked about our rival's strengths.

I think Real Sociedad are playing the same way they always have in recent years, " Valverde added.

"Despite not having a good start to the season, they're recovering and will be up there at the end of the season.

"They don't give away many chances and, so far, they have conceded just one goal. Their defensive system and commitment in individual actions is strong, so we will have to be ready.

"They have good away numbers and it's no surprise that they're doing well. They played well against FC Barcelona and that always gives a team a boost."
