We take a look at the best stops made by Unai Simón, Julen Agirrezabala and Alex Padilla over the course of the year
2024 has been a memorable and spectacular year for Athletic Club in so many ways. Without a doubt, if it weren't for some fantastic goalkeeping performances, the Lions wouldn't have been able to achieve all we've achieved this year.
Unai Simón, Julen Agirrezabala and Alex Padilla were vital in helping us qualify for the Europa League, finish 2024 in the Champions League spots and of course win the Copa for the first time in 40 years.
Unai Simón's performance saw him win LaLiga's 2023/24 Zamora Trophy, given the goalkeeper with least goals conceded, an accolade no Athletic shotstopper had won since Jose Angel Iribar in 1969/70.
Julen Agirrezabala, meanwhile, started in the Copa final and his stops in the penalty shootout were vital in bringing the trophy back to Bilbao after a 40-year wait.
Last but not least, academy goalkeeper Alex Padilla showed his potential when stepping up this season due to injuries suffered by Unai and Julen.
