Introducing Letters and Football 2025

The festival will be held at Geuria! in San Mamés from 17 to 21 March and will cover topics such as sports journalism, the relationship between football and humour, Basque music, the visual aspect of football and the biggest pop culture nightmares

The 2025 edition of the Athletic Club Foundation's Football and Letters festival will take place at San Mames's sports bar 'Geuria!' from Monday March 17 until Friday March 21.

Five days of cultural encounters with top-level figures discussing various topics related to football and literature, music, humour, illustration and advertising.

This year we have a stellar guest list, being joined by Enric González, Javier Aznar, Roberto Moso, Gari, Lore Nekane Billelabeitia, Zuhaitz Gurrutxaga, Carles Sans, Lucía Taboada, Jorge Valdano Sáenz, the hosts of the Campamento Krypton podcast, Antonio Pacheco, Lawerta and Manuel Marsol, designer of the 2025 ‘Letters and Football’ poster. 

Furthermore, this year's programme includes the screening of ‘Get Shirty’, a documentary about the origins of the replica football shirt industry under the Admiral brand.

The same as every year, admission to 'Geuria!' is free, but you must book your ticket online in advance.

Monday 17, 19:00: ‘Conversation between Javier Aznar and Enric González’.

Writer and journalist Enric González (Barcelona, 1959) is an old acquaintance of the Letters and Football festival. His fascinating vision of football always gives him the opportunity to talk about issues that are vital for today's society: corruption, violence, business, hypocrisy... in his own words: ‘the theatre of life’.

On this occasion he will share the stage with Javier Aznar (Santander, 1985), an excellent speaker known for the successful podcast ‘Hotel Jorge Juan’.

Tuesday 18, 19:00: ‘Music, football and identity’, with Roberto Moso, Gari, Lore Nekane Billelabeitia and Zuhaitz Gurrutxaga

The history of Basque rock cannot be explained without two of the guests on the second day of the festival. We'll be joined by Gari, lead singer of Hertzainak and a musician with a brilliant solo career since 1995, and Roberto Moso, founder of Zarama

They will be accompanied in this conversation about music, football and identities by Lore Nekane Billelabeitia (Mungia, 1994), bassist, keyboardist and a singer in the group Belako, in addition to another old acquaintance of Letters and Football, the incomparable Zuhaitz Gurrutxaga.

Wednesday 19, 19:00: ‘Football and humour’, with Lucía Taboada, Carles Sans and Jorge Valdano Sáenz.

'Letters and Football' is a festival that, between reflection and discussion, always opens a window to humour.

This edition features a superb trio: Carles Sans (Barcelona, 1955), founding member of the legendary and brilliant Tricicle, Lucía Taboada (Vigo, 1986), journalist, television presenter and author of some of the scripts for Pantomima Full, and Jorge Valdano Saénz, a scriptwriter with more than two decades of professional experience in the audiovisual industry and creator of the football comedy ‘Headless Chickens'.

Thursday 20, 19:00: ‘Campamento Krypton. Bad football: pop culture pools’, with Jota Lynnot, José Viruete, MAT and Barsen Sánchez.

The 2020 edition of ‘Letters and Football’ already featured a special podcast created by Campamento Krypton for the occasion under the title ‘ Pop Culture and Football’. Now, Jota Lynnot, José Viruete, MAT and Barsen Sánchez return to the festival to present a live podcast with humour, information, curiosities and various anecdotes.

Friday 21, 18:00: Screening of the documentary ‘Get Shirty’.

Directed by Andy Wells, this 2016 British documentary tells the story of how a small Midlands underwear company changed football forever.

Friday 21, 19:00: ‘Football as an image: advertising, illustration and art’, with Antonio Pacheco, Lawerta and Manuel Marsol

In 2021, within the special edition of ‘Thinking Football’ the Foundation organised during the pandemic, a special session was dedicated to football and advertising, which left a great impression. Four years later, ‘Letters and Football’ 2025 picks up the baton from that edition and brings together a trio of advertising experts - Antonio Pachecho -, illustration and art - Lawerta and Manuel Marsol -, to talk about imagery in football.
