Steyning Town: a social and sporting hub in the South Downs
Nestled among Sussex’s beautiful South Downs, the member-owned Steyning Town have 450 players registered across 30 teams at different age-groups
This Non-League Day, Steyning Town CFC host Margate FC at the Shooting Field on Saturday March 22nd at 15:00 GMT.
After achieving promotion last season, the ‘Town’ are currently competing at their highest ever level, sitting in 22nd place in the Isthmian League South East Division (Tier 8 of the English football pyramid).
Although, Steyning have struggled in their first campaign in a new division, they can still achieve safety and a win over Margate could go some way to them climbing up the table.
As with all the other clubs taking part in this initiative, Steyning welcomes any Athleticzales in the area to attend their Non-League Day match in an Athletic shirt as we celebrate our colours together.
Steyning play their home matches at the 1,000-spectator capacity Shooting Field, which underwent extensive refurbishments in 2016 with a state-of-the-art 3G pitch being installed and a new clubhouse being opened.
Tickets for the Town’s clash with Margate will cost £10 for general admission, £6 for concessions and £2 for under-16s.
The charming town of Steyning is nestled among the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. It's about a 30-minute drive from Brighton, while there are also regular buses to and from Shoreham-by-Sea.
Steyning Town History
Formed in 1892, initially as Steyning FC, the club has been maintained a steady presence among the non-league football scene in the south of England.
For most of their existence, Steyning competed in local leagues around the Sussex County area, becoming one of the standout non-league teams in the region.
In 2013, they merged with youth side Steyning Strikers and became Steyning Town Community FC.
By the 2018/19 campaign, the Town had won promotion to the South Combination Premier Division (Tier 9 of English football), staying at that level for five seasons before topping the table last season and going up to the Isthmian League.
Steyning Town in the community
As the club’s name suggest, Steyning take their role within the town’s society very seriously, priding themselves on being a “social and sporting hub” in West Sussex.
Steyning have 450 players registered across 30 teams at different age levels, including a veteran’s side plus six women’s teams from Under-9s up to senior level.
Apart from that the club runs a development centre offering regular training sessions for under-8s to under-15s.
What’s more, every June, they organise a summer youth tournament encouraging local sides from across the county to participate.
Steyning Town is a membership-based organisation, much like Athletic Club, with the members electing a management committee that oversees the club.
The Town are extremely proud of their red and white stripes, with a statement on the club website saying that “the club’s strip is the most powerful form of identity that helps bond the players of all age groups into a single club community. It is therefore a foundation stone of the club’s history and its aspirations”.

About Euskal Non-League Day
Inspired by the British movement, started by James Doe in 2010, Athletic Club Foundation is preparing a third edition of Euskal Non-League Day for the weekend of March 22-23.
Non-League Day is an initiative that connects directly with Athletic Club’s identity. Besides playing a crucial role in local communities, grassroots football is a fundamental part of the club’s youth development strategy and Athletic has affiliate agreements with close to 170 clubs across the Basque Country.
Athletic Club is the only side in LaLiga that organises such an event with the purpose of celebrating non-professional football and encouraging attendance at local grounds during the March international break.
Check out the Athletic Club Foundation’s website for more information about Euskal Non-League Day and all their other projects across the Basque Country.
