Match Pack: Athletic Club vs CA Osasuna (LaLiga MD29)

The international break is over, LaLiga is back, and Athletic Club are now heading into the final stretch with 10 league matches left.

The first hurdle on the home straight comes in the form of CA Osasuna, the Pamplona-based outfit are 14th in the standings, six points above the relegation zone.

A tough match awaits, Vicente Moreno's side have competed well at San Mames in recent years and Ernesto Valverde is conscious of the task ahead.

Athletic are looking to consolidate their hold on fourth place, extend the gap to Villarreal and close in on Atlético Madrid in third.

The Opponents

Head coach: Vicente Moreno

The 50-year-old tactician replaced Jagoba Arrasate in the summer. He's a manager with extensive experience in Spanish football, having also been in charge at Xerez CD, Gimnastic, RCD Mallorca, RCD Espanyol and  UD Almeria. Moreno also had a brief stint as head coach at Saudi Arabian club Al Shabab.
 

Top scorer: Ante Budimir

A tall Croatian striker, Budimir initially joined Osasuna on loan from RCD Mallorca in October 2020 before making the move permanent the following summer.

So far, he has scored 59 goals in 150 appearances for Los Rojillos, with 15 of those strikes having come this season.
 

Recent form: DLDLL

Osasuna had a solid start to the campaign, winning six of their first 12 fixtures. But since then the Rojillos have struggled for form. Since November, their only win in LaLiga was a 2-1 home victory against Real Sociedad in February.

 

Previous Meetings
Our first LaLiga clash with Osasuna took place in the 1935/36 season. In total the two side have faced off in the top flight on 87 ocassions, with the Lions registering 43 victories, 24 draws and 20 defeats.
 

Los Rojillos have visited San Mames 43 times for LaLiga matches. Athletic record against Osasuna in Bilbao stands at: 23 wins, 13 draws and seven defeats.
 

 

Osasuna have proved tough opposition at The Cathedral in recent years. The amount of draws is indicative of how close and intense these fixtures tend to be.

 

The corresponding fixture last season saw Los Leones come back from 0-2 down to draw 2-2. Osasuna scored either side of half-time, while Iñaki Williams pulled one back in the 58th minute and Asier Villalibre salvaged a point with a goal in the 96th minute.
