Valverde: “We're entering a critical period of the season”

Ernesto Valverde reiterated that every point counts as Athletic Club approach what he described as the "critical period" of the campaign.

He also emphasized that a positive result in Sunday's derby against CA Osasuna is vital if Athletic Club want to consolidate their hold on fourth place and a Champions League spot.

The Lions are currently eight points ahead of Villarreal CF, who have a game in hand, while Atletico Madrid are four points above us in third place.

"We're entering a critical period of the season," the gaffer said ahead of Sunday's clash at San Mames (18:30 CEST).

"Winning tomorrow is crucial for us. We're going up against an opponent that always competes well at San Mames. There are ten games left and they are decisive."

Ernesto is keen to see his Lions hit the road running after a two week break for international fixtures.

He said: We want to beat Osasuna. We dominated the last few games here, but they were more clinical.

"It's an important game for us after the victory in Seville. Let's see if we can win at home against a team that always pushes us."

These derbies against 'Los Rojillos' are always intense and Ernesto is fully prepared for a difficult encounter.

"Our intention is to generate chances and not let them get into our defensive third too often. We have to be careful, as they will also be aware of our strong points," he said.
