Rego: “I'm living a dream come true”

Alejandro Rego, 22, admitted that his start to life as a Lion has gone better than he ever could have imagined in his "wildest dreams".

So far in his breakthrough season, the young central midfielder has made six appearances, playing 156 minutes, whilst he also got his first senior goal with the winner against RCD Mallorca at San Mames before the international break.

"I'm living a dream come true: my debut, my first goal and playing in the Champions League," Rego said at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

"It's very special. My teammates are also making everything easier for me and they're supporting me a lot."

Although Rego wants to play "as often as possible", he recognises there's a lot of competition for places and that he's still adapting to competing at a higher level.

He added: "I knew it was going to be difficult because there is a lot of competition in the squad. Every day you have to improve and learn from others. That's what I try to do so I'm ready when my opportunity comes.

“Playing in the top flight isn't for everyone. I still need to adapt to my teammates' pace in order to play more minutes. That's what's expected of me and I'm trying to work on it.

"The standards are very high and with the minutes and opportunities I'm getting, I'm gradually getting there."

Whilst showing gratitude for all the praise he has received since joining the first-team squad, the Bilbao native is keen to keep his feet firmly planted to ground.

“It's a big change, but I'm still the same person I was before," he said.

"I'm very excited and I think all the support I'm receiving is wonderful, but I'll always remain humble, because that's what got me here. I haven't achieved anything yet.
