Valverde: “There are more than just three points at stake”

Ernesto Valverde reiterated that Athletic Club vs Real Madrid is a special match, emphasising the morale boost that can come from registering a positive result in these fixtures.

LaLiga's 'Old Classic' has taken place every single season since the competition was founded in 1929 and the gaffer is preparing for an intense Wednesday night in Bilbao.

“It is an important match in a special week in which we want to be competitive and enjoy ourselves," the gaffer said at his pre-match press conference.

"This is a match our fans eagerly await and we want to do well against a LaLiga title contender. It's a classic fixture in this competition and there are more than just three points at stake. The impetus that comes from beating these teams is significant.

"Sides like Real Madrid are always expected to win. They're towards the top of the league for a reason and we need to be very careful.  Winning matches helps you build momentum and face your next challenges with renewed energy, especially when you beat important opponents."

The Zurigorri head into the rescheduled Matchday 19 fixture after a fine 0-2 win over Levante UD at the Ciutat de Valéncia and the boss is hoping to see his players carry that form into Wednesday's clash at San Mames.

He said: “That win meant a lot. Victories are a relief for everyone. Apart from being a cause for joy, it was essential to gain some positive momentum before these next matches.

"We know how difficult it is to beat Real Madrid, but it's a match that can give us a lot."
